Open Source Geoscience tools from Geoscience Australia

Geoscience Australia (GA) is Australia’s pre-eminent public sector geoscience organisation. We are the nation’s trusted advisor on the geology and geography of Australia. We apply science and technology to describe and understand the Earth for the benefit of Australia:

In 2013 Geoscience Australia officially started its presence on GitHub which now features hundreds of projects including Digital Earth Australia, anuga_core, geoscience-portal and many more.

 

As a modern science organisation GA has pioneered Open Source as a culture of collaborative science since 2006 when its first Open Source Projects ANUGA was released:

It was quickly followed by the release of EQRM and also TCRM  and many more.

In 2016 Geoscience Australia released its Digital Science Strategy which among other things calls for greater openness. In particular:

We make our science transparent by

  • making our products publicly accessible on demand by default
  • establishing trusted Linked Data services
  • making our software Open Source
